Ontario is Trading Spaces

The government of Ontario has introduced legislation that will make it easier for residents of different nursing homes to trade places if both parties agree to do so. For example, if Mrs. Smith resides in nursing home A, and Mrs. Brown resides in nursing home B, but Mrs. Smith's first choice is nursing home B, and Mrs, Brown's first choice is nursing home A, they can, according to the new legislation, simply switch homes. Consequently, each party will be able to live in their preferred home in a more timely fashion by avoiding lengthy waiting lists, as would have been the case under previous legislation.

According to David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-term Care, "Our government is ensuring that long-term care residents are getting the care they need with compassion and commitment. This is a simple, meaningful step to improve their quality of life."

Your local Regional Health Authority or Community Care Access Centre manages admissions and waiting lists for nursing homes, and they will also be responsible for this program.

Spouses who live in different nursing homes and want to reside together will be given priority. Residents who prefer a home according to their religion, ethnicity, or language will be given next priority.
