Fire in Nova Scotia Senior Residence

A fire broke out in a Nova Scotia seniors residence when a resident reached over the stove and her clothes caught fire.    Typically one thinks of stoves being a concern when seniors with memory impairments leave the oven or burners on.  But,  seniors tend to wear loose fitting clothing, and if the stove has controls at the rear, a senior is forced to reach over hot elements to adjust the temperature.  Consequently, a fire is likely because the loose fitting clothing comes in close contact with hot elements.   Stoves with controls at the front are much safer, and it is best to use the front, as opposed to the rear burners.  Please speak with staff at your loved one\'s home to ensure that they conduct regular fire and evacuation drills.
