Brain Size and Alzheimers
Posted on Tue, February 7, 2012 at 8:59 pm
According to a research study headed by Dr. Bradford Dickerson of the Harvard Medical School, those who later developed Alzheimers disease were more likely to have a smaller hippocampus and other areas of the brain affected by Alzheimers, when compared to those who were cognitively normal. More importantly, the areas of the brain affected by Alzheimers can start to shrink up to 10 years before there are any overt signs of the disease. This is a significant step in treatment of Alzheimers - if physicians can make a diagnosis in the disease`s earliest stages, there is hope that they can stop the disease before the symptoms appear.
