My Mom lived there for 2 years until her death. I desperately wanted to take her home, but would have had to quit my job. She did well, as long as she was able to care for herself. Then she broke her hip. A care worker was very unkind to her -refused to help her put her socks on about 3 weeks after the operation, when things were just healing. The worker yelled at her and slapped her leg to the side, causing much pain. When I complained and asked that that person not come near my Mom, I just got the run around. The Director said that as they were unionized, the person had to have 3 complaints against them before they could do anything. As Mom became more ill, the abuse continued. Nothing really violent - more verbal and psychological abuse, making her feel threatened. She contracted a staph infection in the eye that she had previously had cataract surgery in about 2 years before she went to the home and was virtually blind by the time she died. The staff insisted that she get up and go to the dining room even when she was very ill and nearing death. It was a horrible experience and although she has been gone for six years now, I still feel so badly about putting her there. It was only a few months later that the government passed the legislation allowing a person to take time off to care for a family member in their last six months. One just feels so helpless in this circumstance. But I am sure that you have many stories that are similar.
