OUR PHILOSOPHY OF CARE The Ahmon Group “Family Way” philosophy applies principles of the Eden Alternative, Gentle Care, Person-Centered Care and its own Principles of Care in all of its homes. This unique Philosophy provides guidance on how to help residents continue to live a meaningful life when they become too frail to live independently. The focus of care is to treat residents as we would one of our own family members, with respect and genuine concern. The philosophy is congruent with, and helps us to live our Mission and Values and creates a world full of opportunity for our elders while building on the heritage of care philosophy envisioned by the Ahmon Group. The “Family Way” includes opportunities for residents to be respected and honoured for their wisdom. Opportunities also exist for resident’s to give back to their community, and engage in every-day meaningful activities. The residents’ rights are respected at all times. OUR FACILITY Facility description: Laurel Place is a unique, four-storey, 215 person site with a variety of programs provided by the Ahmon Group including 175 Complex Care rooms with Special Care, Bariatric Care, and Convalescent Care. The Ahmon Group partners services with Surrey Memorial Hospital who provide a 20 bed Hospice and a 20 bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit in Laurel Place. The Ahmon Group operates facilities caring for 820 clients including: Morgan Place (2001), Fleetwood Place (2005) (Surrey), and Stanford Place (2008) (Parksville) and Selkirk Place (Victoria) – (2008). There is a gorgeous outdoor central courtyard with a gazebo for smoking clients and outdoor patios on each floor. The building is designed to provide a home-like, secure environment which nurtures the well-being of residents, supports relationships and promotes a sense of community. Accommodation: Our resident rooms are located on three floors all located above the Main floor. All rooms are private accommodation with an ensuite washroom except for four double rooms for couples or persons who choose to share. Pets: The facility supports residents who wish to bring a beloved cat, dog, bird, or other animals to live with them as long as provisions can be made to safely care for them. Each request is individually assessed to determine the capability of accommodation. Smoking provisions: Smoking is prohibited for all visitors and staff. Residents who wish to smoke must be able to way-find to the outdoor gazebo in the inner courtyard. Residents who smoke are assessed to ensure risks are minimized. Personal belongings and furniture: The home provides an electric bed, a three drawer dresser, a bedside table with a locking drawer and pullout writing surface, and all required linens. The rooms are wired to accommodate a small TV and a telephone. Residents are encouraged to bring a familiar personal chair from home. Pictures and wall hangings are encouraged using picture rails with hooks provided by the home. Each room has a lovely memory box outside the door to help friends and family locate their loved one. Closet space is limited so clothing appropriate for the season is best with the alternate season’s clothing stored off site by family. Safety/security features: The building accommodates motorized wheelchairs and scooters with wide hallways. Residents are assessed for safety regarding motorized mobility aides. The exits are coded with key pads for security and the main lobby has specially designed Wander-gates to provide extra security off hours. Home areas, the parkade and the exterior of the building are monitored with in house camera systems. Residents who may be at risk for leaving the building despite security measures are encouraged to be registered with the Alzheimer Society Wandering Registry. Facility or community amenities: Social recreation programs are provided 7 days a week morning, afternoon, and evening and include outings. Laurel Place shares a large, wheelchair accessible bus with two other Ahmon Group sites. Some other specialized services available include Geriatric Psychiatry, Music Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy including Restoration and Activation, Dental Hygiene, Foot Care, Pastoral Care, Music and Art Therapy and Clinical Nutrition. Many volunteers support the daily life of residents including teenagers from local high schools, preschool children, school programs, and all ages of adults who partner to provide spiritual support to residents. The Surrey Hospice Society provides hospice support if that is desired by the resident and/or family. Unique Features: Laurel Place was designed to reflect a unique West Coast feel with soaring, hand-hewn cedar poles and trim on the exterior. Natural daylight enters the building through large windows. The inner courtyard provides a tranquil space for reflection or visiting with a tri-pool pond of flowing water with lovely treed landscaping and plantings. All resident home areas have an external patio for people to enjoy fresh air and the sound of birds just off their dining areas. The decorating of Laurel Place reflects a warm, inviting style with lovely paintings, indoor plants and rich fabrics. The Main floor has a bright Art Studio, an elegant hairdressing spa, a large Recreation room with an excellent dance floor, and a well-equipped Fitness Centre with physiotherapists on staff to supervise and assist residents with their strengthening programs. Our staff is one of our best attributes. Staff were hand-picked by the exceptional leadership team who recruited for passion and dedication in the provision of excellent service to seniors.
