On admitting my mother-in-law to another nursing home, I was surprised to discover that the practices of Leisureworld Caregiving Center, Brampton Meadows were not the industry norm. My mother lived at Leisureworld Brampton Meadows for a few years, and we always felt that one of the main objectives of the home was to relieve her of as much of her savings as possible. Service people, such as hairdressers and nail care professionals, were allowed to visit the residents and solicit appointments, regardless of whether or not those residents had designated power of attorneys for health matters, or were competent enough to decide when such a service was required. Trust accounts were encouraged, which would be quickly depleted, not only by these services, but also by "administration fees" charged by Leisureworld. Other services such as dentistry, were offered right at Leisureworld, but at much inflated prices. In fact, in dealing with the dentist, we found that we were required to sign a form stating that we would pay whatever fee was charged, before an appointment could even be made. We also found that the level of care offered to the residents depended entirely upon whether or not the person had a trust account and whether or not the family was deemed likely to show up. If you are intending to admit a loved one to this home, I recommend that you avoid setting up a trust fund, and ask for all invoices to be sent directly to you for review. I also recommend frequent, unscheduled visits, and a close monitoring of meds. More than once, we found that my mother had refused to take her medication, and that despite the power of attorney we had over her health, the staff just let her go without those needed pills.
