Appalling lack of regard for dignity of memory impaired residents. On each visit to this facility, we found our loved one in state of distress or monotony. Although there were activities for more independent residents, the only stimulation (that we ever witnessed) offered to the less able, was the opportunity to languish in the television lounge. On one occasion we found our aunt lying in bed and moaning with pain from a headache. As we heard her long before reaching her room, it was evident that members of staff whom we passed along the way must have heard her as well but had not tended to her needs, which were only met at our request. Even so, we had to wait for a qualified member of the care team to return to the floor before medication could be administered. The most dreadful example of disregard for a vulnerable person by a member of the ‘care’ team occurred during a mid-morning visit. We were sitting in a sunroom lounge area when a personal support worker, dressed in a white t-shirt and white shorts came in and began shouting reprimands at a resident who had been left, restrained, in a wheel chair. The gentleman sat, smiling as she – in the presence of all the residents and guests – chastised him for having been incontinent of urine. I distinctly recall her saying, “Look what you’ve done! You’ve wet yourself! What are you smiling about? You are bad, this is not funny!” She continued in this manner as she wheeled him away. Inexcusable.
