On November 15th, 2011 at 3:00PM Mary M.MacIntyre posted the following:

My mom was placed in this facility in December of 2010 at age 80 when her Lewy body dementia became severe enough that home-care was no longer a viable option. She had significant memory impairment and was totally unable to carry out any tasks required for daily living although she was physically very mobile. She was placed in a new section with 18 other residents with varying degrees of dependence with as I understand three CCA's, and one duty nurse shared between two sections of the building. Her care workers although over-worked for the most part, I must commend for their professionalism and dedication. On September 9, 2011 my mom had a fall and I being her POA was notified by phone and told that she was not seriously injured. On September 17, 2011 at 4:45 p.m. I received a phone call that my mom again had fallen and was taken to the nearest hospital by ambulance. I was not told the reasons for the fall or how long she had been left unattended only that it occurred in her room and apparently in the bathroom. After spending several hours with her at hospital emergency where she was in great pain, she was seen by the doctor on call and given X-rays that showed bruised ribs, also a bump and bruise on the top of her head that was not addressed at all. Upon her return to the nursing home she has since been wheelchair bound in a chair which is a poor fit for her causing her to spend most of the time in a slumped position. A new wheelchair has been ordered but has not yet arrived as of today November 15, 2011.She has also been moved to another section of the building on the grounds that she requires more care than can be provided in her previous section. It is an older section adjacent to her previous location with 24 residents mostly wheelchair bound and requiring full-time care from four CCA’s. This move seems to be a common pattern in this Home as I was told by several people who had the same thing happens to their loved ones. It is difficult to move around in the area with residents in the hallways and common room taking up so much space with wheelchairs. Also the odor is very unpleasant as there are not enough care workers to attend to the needs of these residents if they may need to use the washroom. I have had to ask someone to come and change my mom who was sitting in a soiled brief for most of the morning and afternoon. I shudder to think of how often they may be left in that condition when there is no one there to ask for them and they are unable to do so on their own. It is my feeling that the quality of care is not adequate when the needs of the residents require more staff than is presently allotted. There is very little activity except for watching TV and a once a week bingo game. I do not know if there is any physical activity such as getting people like my mom up walking so that she does not become completely wheelchair bound. I also feel that the lines of communication between family and staff in the form of at least quarterly meetings need to be addressed so that all are made aware of changes in the condition of loved ones. Overall, I see that the Northside Guest Home is not held in as high esteem as it once was and perhaps expansion has made it less so.
