My mother was in Valley Haven for 43 days. For 23 days she was handling her own incontinent pads by herself with night pads we had brought over from her previous residence. She kept telling us that "the pads are too big!" When we asked the staff about it, they said "she has to use what we are giving her." They told us that if she wanted anything different than what they were providing that she had to pay for that extra. We never realized that they hadn't been giving her anything to use nor helping her with her incontinence needs until after 3 weeks. All she had were the big left over night pads! Also, one day I found her in her room crying. She said her legs were hurting. When we looked at them they were huge and swollen. We then found out that she had been taken off of her water pill and that she was being given 56 extra strength tylenol per week. A lot of pills for a 95 year old women who never took a pain pill in her life. The activities were lacking. When I asked the manager about Bingo as my mother had been an active Bingo player in her life, her response was, "We tried Bingo once and nobody is interested in playing." The calendar didn't seem to have too much on it to do. Another thing we noticed was that the staff seemed to ignore the residents. They talked to each other, but not to the residents. My mother declinded in the 43 days she was there and was losing her ability to walk very far. The day we came to move her, we arrived about noon. She was still in her night time depend which was completely soaked. Even her pants were wet and the urine was dripping down her legs. We took her just as she was. When we arrived at the Waverly (extended care) she was welcomed with hugs and kisses by the staff and residents. The care aid from her floor took her right up to her room where she was washed and changed. In the short time she has been at the Waverly she has blossomed. She is happy, socializing, walking and participating in all the acitivities, especially Bingo!
