SEIU to Dalton McGuinty - Stop Dithering on Nursing Home Standards
Posted on Fri, July 4, 2008 at 6:45 pm
TORONTO, July 4 /CNW/ - There are four priorities the Ontario government must act on immediately to ensure nursing home residents are cared for in dignity says Sharleen Stewart, President of Service Employees International Union Local 1 Canada, a union that represents 15,000 nursing home workers.
<<1. Immediately set a standard of 3.5 hours of care per resident. The standard must only include direct personal care professionals such as Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers.
2. Ensure every Ontario incontinent nursing home resident receives a "diaper" change when needed and not until it is 80% full. In January, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care officials refused a request by SEIU and the Ontario Federation of Labour to review its incontinent products policy.
3. Every nursing home resident should receive three baths per week. This was a promise made by Dalton McGuinty to SEIU prior to the 2003 election.
4. Every violation of a standard in every nursing home must be posted on the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care web site in a more timely manner than it is currently. We need real time reporting of violations.
>>In addition every resident and family member acting as a legal guardian must be given a complete up to date inspection report of the home and what the home has done to comply with the inspection orders prior to any admission.
