A Healthy Way to Smoke?
Posted on Fri, November 21, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Billed as the next generation of smoking, "electronic cigarettes" are an alternative to chemical laced regular cigarettes and offer users a small dose of nicotene in each puff. When a user inhales, a small microdevice activates a liquid which vapourizes nicotene and is inhaled. In some devices the microprocessor also activates a small orange LED device which simulates a lit cigarette. In others, the LED is blue. The technology was developed by Hon Lik of China.
Producers of electronic cigarettes bill the device as a healthy substitute for regular cigarettes and the over 4,000 chemicals that are contained in each stick. They also contain no tobacco or tar. Others are touting these 'cigarettes' as a friendly way to wean long-time smokers off the habit. However, the World Health Organization issued a release in September of 2008 stating that a lack of evidence means that they cannot, as yet, consider electronic cigarettes a legitimate cessation aid.

In the U.S., the e-cigarette is not subject to tobacco regulations such as the Clean Indoor Air Act. In the United Kingdom, electronic cigarette use is unrestricted and has been popularized by London nightclub Chinawhite which allows its use indoors while prohibiting regular smoking.
