Forum on Better Senior Care Crosses Canada
Posted on Sat, November 7, 2009 at 12:42 pm
SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 6, 2009)
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is spearheading a national campaign to raise awareness about the state of residential long-term care across Canada, with stops across the country.
As part of the campaign, CUPE is hosting a public event in Sydney on Tuesday, November 10th.
Guest speaker Toby Edelman is a senior policy attorney with the Center for Medicare Advocacy, Inc. in the United States. Edelman will explain how poor staffing and privatization in residential long-term care facilities have dramatically reduced quality care - and why Canada must avoid going down the same road.
CUPE will also be releasing new research on Canadian residential long-term care, including a close up look at who `owns the nursing home industry` in Nova Scotia.
A new report, entitled Residential Long-Term Care in Canada: Our Vision for Better Seniors` Care finds a long-term care system in crisis. Severe underfunding and privatization have created serious access and quality problems. The result is clear - our elders are not getting the care they need, and deserve.
WHAT: A public event to discuss residential long-term care in Canada
WHO: Toby Edelman, Centre for Medicare Advocacy, Leanne MacMillan, CUPE Atlantic Research Representative
WHEN: Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 pm
WHERE: Delta Hotel, Sydney
